Where It’s Needed Most: Unrestricted Giving

Sometimes the greatest gift you can give is flexibility. Unrestricted donations allow the School to direct funds to where they will have the most impact,  investing in new opportunities, and supporting initiatives that might not yet even exist.

Unrestricted giving means that when an opportunity arises the School has the freedom to act swiftly and decisively. It is the most powerful and versatile form of support you can offer, and it is always needed.

THE BURSARY FUND

Deep within the people-centred values and ethos of the School has always been the recognition that access to a High School education should be available to all who demonstrate the ability and drive to benefit from, and contribute to school life and financial barriers to entry should not hinder them.

When The High School of Glasgow became an independent school in 1976, the Governors were determined to provide the means for as many pupils of ability as possible to attend, regardless of their family’s financial circumstances. As such, The High School of Glasgow Educational Trust was created.

In the Bursary Fund’s inaugural year, 8 pupils received a small level of bursary support. As we near the 50 year mark since its inauguration, over 300 young people have benefitted from a High School education thanks to access to a Bursary Award. During the 2023/24 session, the School supported 56 pupils, with bursaries ranging from 5% to 100%, 22 of whom received a complete 100% bursary.

Our commitment to bursaries is also part of our historic legacy as the Town School, a school that has evolved as the city of Glasgow itself has evolved, to enrich the educational opportunities available to the young people of Glasgow and the West, benefitting the whole school, raising academic standards, ensuring inclusivity and diversity within our community and elevating the learning experience for all.

Leaving a Legacy

Writing a Will is a deeply personal matter. We appreciate that you first must make provision for your family and loved ones in your Will, but if you would consider remembering the High School with a bequest, you will create a lasting legacy that will benefit many children and young people.

Including a charitable bequest can also have financial benefits by reducing the burden of inheritance tax on your estate.

All those who have pledged a legacy to the School will become members of the 1124 Society. Being part of this society comes with the opportunity to attend special events dedicated to recognising and celebrating the generosity of your commitment to the future of the High School.

Philanthropic gifts, such as legacies, help the School by providing greater clarity around financial planning for the future. Your support will help to shape the School’s continued excellence and will impact the lives of young people, and the wider High School community, for years to come.
