Romey Clark

Name: Romey Clark
Job: Painting Cataloguer, Bonhams
Industry: Fine Art
Class of: 2015
House: Law

What do you do?

I currently live in London, working for international auction house Bonhams, where I catalogue paintings for upcoming auctions in their Knightsbridge office.

Working across three departments – ‘19th century British and European Art’, ‘Marine’ and ‘Travel and Exploration’ – means I get to see a wide variety of different artworks.

How did you get to where you are today?

After leaving HSOG in 2015, I studied History of Art at the University of Edinburgh. Whilst studying, I carried out a number of internships in both commercial art galleries and auction houses. It was the fast-paced environment of auctioneering that really captured my interest.

After graduating in 2019, I began working for Bonhams as Receptionist and Administrator in their Edinburgh office. This entry level job gave me fantastic insight into the art market and a solid understanding of the business itself. In March 2021, I transferred within the company, moving into a new role in the Pictures Department in Knightsbridge, London. I use my degree every day which makes my four years of university, numerous exams and essays worth it.

I believe that HSOG gave me the confidence and foundation from a young age to follow my passions. It also instilled in me the belief that, if I put in time and effort, I can do anything I set my mind to.

What is a standout memory of your time at The High School of Glasgow?

I loved my time at school, I made friends for life and memories which I will forever look back on. In my fifth year, I had the opportunity to go to Iceland on a Geography field trip. Seeing the Northern Lights alongside great friends is something I will never forget. We had the opportunely to swim between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, meaning I really was in two places at once!

Other standout memories include all the wonderful ceilidhs the School put on for us, particularly St Andrews Night and the Leavers Dance. I also thoroughly enjoyed the Leavers Course at the end of Sixth Year.

What one piece of advice would you give to current pupils and recent leavers as they look to their futures?

Always speak up and ask questions. More often than not, people are happy to help. It is important to ask questions when you don’t understand something and seek extra help when you feel lost. Remember, no question is a stupid question.

Please reach out to me if you are a current pupil or leaver seeking advice in a career in this sector. Similarly, I’d encourage Former Pupils or parents looking to buy or sell art, to get in touch as I’d be delighted to help.
