Raymond Williamson

Name: Raymond Williamson
Job: Senior Partner, MacRoberts (retired)
Industry: Law
Class of: 1960
House: Moore

What do you do?

After graduating MA LLB from Glasgow University, I spent 40 years with MacRoberts solicitors starting as an apprentice and retiring as Senior Partner in 2006. From there, I sat as an Employment Tribunal Judge for 10 years.

How did you get to where you are today?

A combination of a good work / life balance. Moreover, I have always tried to follow the advice I got as an apprentice: “clients are not interested in what the law is – they just want to know what to do and if advice is given by letter their attention span doesn’t stretch to more than three quarters of a page.“

What is a standout memory of your time at The High School of Glasgow?

Without a doubt, the most important aspect of my life at School was music. The Head of Music was Harry McGill who recognised that young Williamson, whilst interested in music, was completely without talent. He was prepared to encourage the former and overlook the latter. God bless him. He fostered a lifelong passion for music which has immeasurably enriched my life.

What one piece of advice would you give to current pupils and recent leavers as they look to their futures?

The advice I was given as an apprentice can be adapted as necessary to fit whatever career you follow. Providing practical and understandable solutions for those you work for is undoubtedly another essential skill.
