Rossie Stone

Name: Rossie Stone
Job: Founder of Dekko Comics Ltd, Illustrator, Designer, Writer & Animator
Industry: Education, Learning Support & Entertainment
Class of: 2010
House: Clyde

What do you do?

I make educational comics out of school curriculum information for children aged 9-12 on topics including Maths to English to Science and more. I deliver workshops where I teach learning strategies and I speak at conferences too. I also make other comic and art assets (educational and otherwise) as a service for businesses, charities and corporations.

How did you get to where you are today?

I struggled with school work and exams. Eventually, I got fed up with being bored of revision and failing exams, so I decided to turn my revision notes into comics just to make it fun. It succeeded, but also helped me absorb the information in a way that spoke to my strengths. To my surprise, I achieved my first Grade A in an academic exam. This inspired me to start up my revision technique as a business in 2016. We have since won awards, appeared on national television, distributed internationally, and I have even delivered TEDX Talks.

What is a standout memory of your time at The High School of Glasgow?

The school meals! And my good relationships with many of the teachers. I also remember some quality football times in the carpark during lunchtime (I was always either defender or a goalie; with the most eccentric goal-saving skills the playground had ever seen). And finally, performing in school musicals, which was a joy, such as Godspell, The Crucible and Hot Mikado.

What one piece of advice would you give to current pupils and recent leavers as they look to their futures?

Focus on what you love and what you enjoy. That’s where you’ll find what you’re most confident in, as well as the things that you feel are most worthwhile pursuing in life. Don’t try to rush towards success and always be open to learning. That’s my experience, anyway.
