Jess Insall

Jess Insall

Name: Jess Insall
Job: Financial Accountant, Steedman & Co
Industry: Finance
Class of: 2020
House: Law

What do you do?

I am a Financial Accountant with specialist knowledge of cryptoassets and blockchain technology. I work with a range of start ups and individuals on technical and data analysis projects, as well as HMRC/FCA crypto compliance.

How did you get to where you are today?

Leaving HSOG after fifth year, I joined Johnston Carmichael as an Audit Assistant through their school leavers’ program. Working in an auditing capacity gave me a really good grounding in accounting, but when the opportunity came up to get involved in the crypto space I couldn’t turn it down!

I started my current job with Steedman & Co in June 2022. Working in such a fast paced industry has given me the opportunity to speak at conferences, meet loads of interesting people, and learn a huge amount about how technology and innovation works.

One of the best things about working in accountancy is the focus on professional development. Both my former and current employers have supported me through my ACCA exams, and I hope to qualify as a Chartered Accountant later this year.

What is a standout memory of your time at The High School of Glasgow?

I have always been someone who likes to keep busy, and the number of extra curricular activities at the High School made that pretty easy! The music department in particular was always such a lively place to be.

What one piece of advice would you give to current pupils and recent leavers as they look to their futures?

Think for yourself! It can be daunting choosing a path that is different than everyone else’s, but so worth it to build the life that you want for yourself. I have really enjoyed rolling up my sleeves and getting stuck into work straight out of school. It’s such a satisfying feeling being financially independent, and I’m so grateful to have a job that I love.
