Team HSOG back on their bikes for the Bursary Fund!
, by HSOG Community
Nearly a year after Team HSOG’s epic 900km endurance cycling challenge in aid of the Bursary Fund, a peloton of High School staff will be jumping back on their bikes and hitting the road once more at the start of August, all to raise money for bursaries.
Land’s End to John O’Groats (often referred to as the “LeJog” route) is a classic and popular route for cycling enthusiasts to tackle. Having already clocked up an impressive 900km last year, the latest challenge will see Team HSOG attempting to complete the remaining distance of 554km, which will then collectively total the distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
Staff members Jane Armstrong (Mathematics Teacher), Jenny Dougall (Head of Support for Learning), Martin Dougall (Head of Biology, who retires at the end of the 2024/25 session) Danny Hamilton (Mathematics Teacher) and Tom Lyons (English Teacher), supported by Barry FitzGerald (Teacher of Physical Education and Geography as well as SQA Coordinator for the School), comprise the group who will tackle this latest challenge.
Speaking about their next cycling endeavour, Tom said: “As we were approaching the finish line of the 900km cycle at Old Anniesland last September, we truly felt that all the effort we had put in had paid off. At the time, it was jokingly suggested that one day we should try to complete the distance to John O’Groats. At an end of Spring term event, plans were put in motion!
“We wanted to play our part and do whatever we could to support the growth of the Bursary Fund. We see the Fund as integral to the heritage, ethos and identity of the High School and feel that it must be maintained and expanded going forward to help as many young people of potential from Glasgow and beyond access the benefits that an HSOG education has to offer.”
Team HSOG will depart from Glasgow on Monday 4th August with stops at Killin, Aviemore, Dingwall and Kyle of Tongue before crossing the finish line at John O’Groats on Friday 8th August. As well as clocking up a further 554km, the peloton will face a grueling 5,200m of ascent on the journey.

We wish them all the very best of luck and look forward to hearing how they got on!
